Does a group end up dividing a community?
March 18th, 2007 by mepelbaum
So i was just maintaining the group my friend and I created on facebook and felt a direct relevance to the initiative to this project, so figured i’d post a little something here.
The religious references (in the following) have nothing to do with a particular religion, rather with the idea of being a group.
A friend of mine (don’t recall which) sent me a link to join a facebook group called “HOW MANY JEWISH PEOPLE ARE ON FACEBOOK???” which can be found here http://uci.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2226360963 the goal of this group is to unite jews into a group to give a sense of ‘community’ and ‘unity’.
But does ‘unity’ come from isolating others out of our groups and microcosms?
So my friend (andre) and I (mark) decided to create our own group exploring this issue. In the early stages we thought “NOBODY CARES HOW MANY JEWS THERE ARE ON FACEBOOK!!” would be a good name. although it is slightly misleading, it is designed to read deeper into the idea of isolation versus uniting communities. The group explores the division of people through the idea of groups formed according to particular attributes.
Our group can be found here: http://facebook.com/group.php?gid=2254726165
We only started up a few days ago (march 14th) and have already reached 30 people (as of March 17).
I encourage you to check us out to explore what we have to say/think as well as offer your own input. (Join our group to let us know you stopped by!)
When it comes to a leader, he/she shouldn’t only appeal to a certain group (i.e. the minority, working class, etc.) we need someone who can bring us all together to find a tangible solution for our common problems.
